Spot welding electrodes (welding caps) at the end of the welding gun transmit welding current and electrode force to the workpiece during resistance spot welding.

Sheets, which are joined together by the welding process, constantly leave residues on the plier caps, which on 4 to 6 mm welds leads to considerable quality losses. Previously, the caps were cleaned by hand with a pair of pliers and a file; thus, in view of ever faster cycle times on the production lines for automobiles, the use of milling machines was inevitable.

Thanks to efficient cap milling integrated into the automated welding process and the automated change of caps, the quality of the spot welds can be maintained at the highest level. The electrodes can also be used for longer.
